Branding Pathways
Providing a pathway for small to medium enterprises for taking action and making environmental claims.
Renewable Energy Claims
The following is an overview of the most common environmental claims and what actions are required. Ranked from simple to complex.
100% GreenPowerTM
Branding provided by the government's national GreenPower program for those who have purchased 100% of their electricity from accredited renewable generators.
The GreenPower premium is a charge on top of your grid electricity costs to ensure the electricity you use is replaced with power from GreenPower accredited generators.
- - Purchasing can be done by contracting with your retailer or as a decoupled bulk purchase from this website, in arrears if required.
- - The 100% GreenPower logo can be used by application to the GreenPower Program.
- - Audit is internal to the Program and included in the GreenPower premium.
- - Once permission to use the logo is granted no other audit is normally required.
RE:100 Standard
Similar to above but requires the participant establish a program with the RE100 program and submit annual reports to track their progress towards an eventual claim of 100% renewable energy.
- - Purchasing can be done either using GreenPower, or by sourcing, purchasing and self-surrendering Large Scale Generation certificates from appropriate generators.
- - Reporting will require knowledge of electricity reporting protocols or appointment of a qualified RE100 assessor.
- - See GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance or RE:100 Guidance.
Reduced Carbon Claims
Carbon Neutral: Similar to above but requires inclusion of emissions from all sources e.g. gas, transport, waste disposal, refrigeration leakage as well as electricity usage.
- - If no “renewable energy” claim is to be made, then electricity emissions can be offset using carbon credits.
- - Can be self-assessed but will require some knowledge of standard reporting protocols: see GHG Protocol Corporate Emissions Guidance.
- - Attaining Carbon Neutrality will normally require the purchase of offsets.
- - Does not require 3rd party audit unless challenged.
SBTi / Climate Active
- - Climate Active Certified: Australian Government accreditation for Carbon Neutral requiring audit by an accredited professional before claim can be made.
- - A management plan to reduce gross emissions over time must be submitted and approved.
- - Accreditation costs involved.
